In Sanskrit word 'gana' (गण) means: समूह/भीड़: Group, Troop, Multitude, Crowd, Assembly
समुदाय/वंश: Clan, Tribe.

Ganesha is definietly one the most important deities in Hinduism associated with powerful and meaningful aspects of life such as fortune, arts, science, logic, intellect. As the lord and commander of ganas this deity is also representing variety of categories - word 'gana' means also 'group, multitude, or categorical system'.
